Increasingly, people are getting health care information from the Web, however wading through cyberspace can be frustrating.  Below is an eclectic list of some sites that offer general information from non-hospital sources.

Sometimes, the first stop in surfing the Internet is the search engine like: Google; Dogpile, Yahoo, Hotbot or Excite.

National Health Service, Direct is a useful site that patients can access. (Includes very good audiovisual clips).


Patient.co.uk This site provides a gateway to many very good sites that contain patient information leaflets.


PRODIGY's patient information leaflets are excellent.

Centerwatch

The site lists where new drugs are being tested in clinical trials, and has thousands of trials listed by broad disease categories.

Healthgate

The site provides content on health concerns collated from such sources as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Surgeons.  It is geared to consumers needing information on a medical condition.  Medical researchers and health professionals use the site ot access medical databases from such sources as Medline, AIDSLine and CancerLit.

Ims-health

A comprehensive site on the pharmaceutical industry, it tracks drug sales and treatment trends for certain conditions.

Medicare.gov

Along with information on Medicare, HCFA's site has begun posting nursing homes' quality survey reports.  "Nursing Home Compare" lets consumers get information by entering a home's name or by searching within a geographic region.  The database also identifies violations, and compares the number of violations for each home with the average number of violations per nursing home in the state. It also lists Medicare HMOs that are not renewing contracts. (The site, launched in September 1998 is a work in progress.)

Medscape

Geared to doctors and consumers, the site pools information from medical journals carries clinical articles, and features news stories and a medical dictionary.

 

Medsite

This site actually is a search engine.  Run by Medsite Publishing, it rates and reviews more than 10,000 medical and health-related sites for target audience and quality.

Rxlist

The site is a thorough index of drugs on the market and in development. It includes information on side effects, ingredients and which insurers cover the drug.
